Police alert residents of grandparents scam

by bill grimes

Effingham police have been investigating a potential scam.

Police said in a news release that suspects phoned three local residents between 10:04 a.m. Tuesday and 3:03 p.m. Wednesday to ask for money to bail their grandchildren out of jail.

None of the potential victims gave out any information or sent money and all three told police that none of them had a grandchild in jail.

“Scams similar to these are going on within our community and the Effingham Police Department wishes to advise residents to verify any unusual contact requesting transfer of funds,” police said in the release.

Police said the investigation is continuing and the public is reminded never to give out personal information, such as bank account or credit card numbers to anyone they do not know, and to thoroughly verify information by contacting local police.
