EFFINGHAM — The National Weather Service in Lincoln is not confirming at this time whether a Tornado sighting in the Altamont area is in fact a tornado.
According to meteorologist Dan Smith, NWS teams are being sent out today and tomorrow to survey reported damage from storms throughout Central Illinois. Smith said the teams will be determining if damage was caused by tornado winds or just straight-line winds, which he said gusted up to 60 miles per hour in areas outside the storms, with stronger winds in areas closer.
Smith did say preliminary reports show damage in hard-hit Washington in northcentral Illinois was caused by a tornado.
He said more information will be available in coming days.
