Montrose residents complain motorcycles too loud

Bill Grimes
Effingham Daily News

MONTROSE — Montrose village officials are tired of hearing complaints about loud motorcycles speeding through town.

“There’s been some citizens complaining about motorcycles being real noisy,” said Village President Dennis Fletcher. “You can really hear them when they leave the bar.”

Fletcher said he also has heard citizen complaints about bikers speeding through the four-way stop at the intersection of U.S. 40 and Spring Creek Road. But he added Dozer’s Pub owner Lyle McKinney said he would talk to some of his customers about the noise issue.

“Lyle said he would post something at the bar,” Fletcher said.

The board also passed a revised liquor ordinance that includes several fee changes. Class A licenses for bars will be increased to $1,000, while Class B licenses for package liquor will be increased to $850. In addition, the one-day license fee will now be $50.

Also Monday, the board passed its annual appointment ordinance, in which salaries are set for the village’s appointed employees and elected officials.

Re-appointed were Treasurer Mikki Esker, $382.35 per month; public works employee Jim Hilton, $20,800 annually; Fletcher, a part-time public works employee, $10,757.76 per year; and water-sewer operator Carl Pals, $135 per month.

Pals is the Teutopolis village foreman, but also serves Montrose in a part-time capacity because the village has no certified water-sewer operators.

The board also appointed Tracy Berberich as its attorney and Roger Charleston as its engineer, both on an as-needed basis.

Among elected officials, Fletcher will receive $75 a month for his services as president, while Village Clerk Alicia Westjohn will receive $235 per month. Trustees Marcella Hilton, Majorie Bushur, William Kingery, Carolyn Jansen, Eric Esker and Danny Tague also will receive $30 per month.
