St. Elmo residents take it all off to raise money for theater

ST. ELMO — It reads like a movie: A group of middle-aged — and older — small town residents decide to bare it all — almost — for a good cause. But for a St. Elmo group trying to get an old theater up and running again, its a real way for them to raise money and have some fun.

The St. Elmo Historical Society put together a calendar, featuring some of its members and others in the community seminude. The 2010 “Naughty but Nice!” calendar features women and men ranging in age from 40s to 70s, posing with strategically placed objects so as not to reveal too much. While the photos lack clothing, they are tastefully done, according to historical society member Jennieann Heischmidt, who is Ms. January.

“You probably won’t see as much skin as you would on the beach,” said Heischmidt, whose husband is Mr. May.

“It’s done in fun. It’s tasteful, not vulgar,” she said, adding the photo session wasn’t “all that bad.”

Heischmidt admitted her college-age children were aghast at their parents posing in the calendar.

“They’ll get over it, and I’m an adult,” she said.

It took about a year to complete the calendar idea the society has tossed around doing for a couple of years. The idea stemmed from the movie “Calendar Girls” in which a group of British women discreetly pose nude while engaged in everyday activities in order to raise money for charity.

Heischmidt said society members weren’t serious about doing such a calendar at first and would laugh at the idea. Eventually, the fundraising prospect gained momentum, and the society finally decided to do it.

“It took a while to get everybody on board and get enough people to do the photos,” said historical society member Stormy Dilley.

Dilley opted not to be in the calendar having been a St. Elmo alderman at the time — and for another reason.
