Ruby Phillips, 101, of Casey, passed away at 7 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013, at Heartland Manor Nursing Center, Casey.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 22, at Barkley Funeral Chapel, Greenup. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in Harmony Cemetery, rural Greenup. Memorials can be made to either to Heartland Manor or Simple Blessings in Casey. She was born Aug. 29, 1912, in Cumberland County, near Timothy, the daughter of Nellie and Garrett Wall. Nellie passed away Feb. 9, 1914, when Ruby was 17 months old. Mr. and Mrs. Steve Askew, who lived near Timothy at the time, took Ruby in their home and raised her as their own daughter. When Ruby was four years old, they moved to their farm near Union Center, where they were living when Mr. Askew passed away.
Ruby graduated from Casey High School in 1930. She married Arlie Phillips on Nov. 12, 1932. They lived with her foster mother until her death on July 8, 1958. They had two sons Eddie Lee and Danny Joe. Eddie passed away at age 34. Ruby was a homemaker. She was a member of the Nebo Separate Baptist Church. Her husband of 67 years preceded her in death on November 18, 1999.
She is survived by her son, Joe and wife Patsy Phillips of Casey; daughter-in-law, Ramona Phillips Carney of Mattoon; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
