EFFINGHAM —  Marie E. Bloemer, 85, of Effingham, passed away Thursday, Oct. 4, 2012, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, Effingham.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Effingham. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the church with a 7 p.m. parish wake service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Anthony schools.     Marie was born Aug. 4, 1927, in Island Grove, the daughter of Joseph and Theresia (Luchtefeld) Probst. She married Francis J. (Bud) Bloemer on Aug. 27, 1949.

Marie was an avid baker, with her specialties being cinnamon sweet rolls, homemade bread and blackberry cobbler made with fresh blackberries picked from her pasture. She was a grain producer and dairy farmer who, along with her husband, Bud, spent every morning and evening milking the herd.

In addition, she raised chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys and many other animals. She kept busy tending to her massive garden, canning fruits and vegetables, and cooking for large family dinners. She sewed beautiful quilts that she gave to her children, grandchildren and to the St. Anthony church picnic.

She loved to entertain everyone with her harmonica, dance and go fishing in her pond. She often sang “She’ll be coming around the mountain when she comes …” Her family will miss her dearly and pray that “she’ll be riding six white horses” in heaven.

Marie enjoyed reciting the names of her children and, even in the late stages of Alzheimer’s, she would have days when she remembered all 15 of their names. She taught her children to have a strong work ethic and was proud of their accomplishments.

Surviving are her children, Oscar (Norma) Bloemer of Effingham, Darlene (Louis) Esker of Effingham, Linda (Phil) Stalling of St. Louis, Donald (Mary) Bloemer of Green Creek, Ronald (Vickie) Bloemer of Effingham, Carol (Ron) Wendt of Effingham, Shirley (fiance, David Reha) Olerich of San Jose, Calif., Marilyn (Rem) Woodruff of Effingham, Theresa (Bill) Hardiek of Teutopolis, Rosalie (Tom) Westendorf of Effingham, Patty (Joe) Jansen of Mason, Julie (Bruce) Willenborg of Knoxville, Tenn., Connie (Darrell) Brinkmann of Wildwood, Mo., Cindy (Chris) Fraterrigo of Chicago and Tony (Lisa Sasso) Bloemer of Effingham; 32 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her brother, Joe, (Inis) Probst of Island Grove; and sister-in-law, Florence Probst of Island Grove.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis (Bud) Bloemer; daughter, Mary Bloemer; sisters Freida Weishaar and Hilda Nieman; and brothers, Ed Probst and Bernie Probst.
