Stella Probst

Stella C. Probst, 93, of Effingham, formerly of rural Sigel, passed away at 4:05 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27 2013, at The Glenwood Assisted Living Center.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Michael’s Church in Sigel, with the Rev. Robert DeGrand and Sister Pat Thies officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery, Sigel. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today, Aug. 29, at St. Michael’s Church, Sigel, with a 7:15 p.m. rosary followed by a parish wake service. Swengel-O’Dell Funeral Home, Neoga, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to St. Michael’s School in Sigel. Mrs. Probst’s family expresses appreciation and gratitude for the wonderful care and love given to Stella by her caregivers and The Glenwood staff. Stella was born Sept. 20, 1919, in Cumberland County, the daughter of John and Anna (Lake) Deters. As a young woman, Stella worked at various jobs in the Chicago area. During World War II, she worked at the Ammunition Container Corp. in Chicago. She married Ambrose B. Probst on June 14, 1941, at Sacred Heart Church in Lillyville. They were blessed with 69 years of marriage.

After the birth of their first son, Stella and her husband purchased a farm near Sigel in 1947, and farmed together for many years. She was known for her dedication to her family and her strong work ethic. She was a member of the St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, the St. Michael Council of Catholic Women, and the Catholic Daughters of America.

She leaves two sons, Jim Probst and wife, Valerie of rural Sigel, Ambrose John Probst and wife, Blenda of Hinesville, Ga.; five daughters, Betty Boos of Effingham, Mary Margaret Bubash and her husband, Norm of Waterloo, Susan Ordner and husband, Tom of Sigel, Sharon Lamar and husband, Steve of Swan Valley, Mont., and Angie Esker and husband, Joe of Teutopolis; one sister, Adeline Probst of Effingham; two brothers-in-law, Eugene Probst of Effingham, and Francis Wente of Teutopolis; three sisters-in-law, Theresa Probst of Effingham, Lorraine Deters of Teutopolis, and Pauletta Wente of Teutopolis; 33 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Probst was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ambrose B. Probst; four brothers, Ralph, Herbert, Albert and John “Jack” Deters; three sisters, Hilma Willenborg, Mary Koester and Sister Jacqueline (Selma Deters); one son-in-law, Don Boos; one grandson, Tommy Ordner; two great-grandsons, Matthew Probst Miller and David Ordner Cassin.
