Robert Richard ‘Bob’ Taphorn, 80, of Altamont, died at 1:18 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, Effingham.
Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Clare Catholic Church with the Rev. Joseph Simburger officiating. Burial will be in St. Clare Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Gieseking Funeral Home with a 5:30 p.m. rosary service. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice. Bob was born on Friday, July 29, 1932, in Piatt County, to Henry and Elva Clare (Shaffer) Taphorn. He served in the U.S. Army during Korea from 1951 to 1955 as a machinist attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He married Bettie Mae Brand on Feb. 27, 1965, at St. James Catholic Church in Decatur. She preceded him in death on Jan. 28, 2013. He was a member of St. Clare Catholic Church, lifelong farmer and member of the Effingham County Farm Bureau.
He is survived by his children: sons, Warren Taphorn of Beecher City, Gerald Taphorn of Altamont; and daughter, Mindy Taphorn of Altamont; brothers, George and Harold Taphorn of Beecher City.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one brother, Lawrence Taphorn.
