Frances J. Short, age 88, of Neoga, passed away at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2013, at Heartland Christian Village, Neoga.
Funeral services in her honor will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at United Presbyterian Church, located at 704 Locust, Neoga, with the Rev. Joe Marting officiating. Burial will be in Neoga Cemetery, Neoga. Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today, May 13, at Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, 1200 Wabash Ave., Mattoon. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that memorials in Frances’ honor be made to the Neoga High School track program or United Presbyterian Church, Neoga. Born Nov. 26, 1924, in Mattoon, Frances was the daughter of Reaves and Nora E. (Richards) Wiley. She married James A. Short on May 29, 1944, in Neoga. He passed away in 2000.
Frances was a member of United Presbyterian Church, Neoga, and the United Presbyterian Church Women’s Group. Other memberships included the American Legion Auxiliary for more than 45 years and The Order of the Eastern Star in Neoga. Frances enjoyed quiet time sewing and playing word games; loved spending time outdoors, golfing, mushroom hunting and spending time at Lake Mattoon; and enjoyed collecting Indian artifacts and rock collecting. However, more than anything, she treasured spending time with family and friends, especially while traveling.
Survivors include their children, Jim Short (wife, Linda) of Mattoon, IL, Bob Short (wife, Ruth) of Neoga and Mary Drake (husband, Steve) of Charleston; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Tim Short; and one sister, Jo Ellen Wiley.
