Clyde Ersil Tharp, 81, of Effingham, passed away peacefully at 5:17 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2013, at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Johnson Funeral Home, Effingham. Entombment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum, Effingham. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday before the services at the funeral home. Clyde was born Sept. 27, 1931, in Estill County, Ky., the son of Jesse M. and Edna (Hamilton) Tharp. He married Anna Lee Brandenburg on Oct. 19, 1954. They divorced in 1979. He married Norma Garrison Hillhouse on June 22, 1985.
Clyde was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean War. He was a member of Effingham American Legion Post 120. He was a machinist by trade and worked at McCalls in Dayton, Ohio, for 17 years and World Color Press in Effingham for 20 years. After retirement, he worked for Effingham Taxi for several years. Clyde was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 37 years. He received the Illinois Volunteer of the Year Award in Springfield in 2003 for holding the AA meetings at the Vandalia Prison for over 30 years.
Clyde is survived by his wife, Norma Tharp of Effingham; daughters, Deborah (Joe) Cohorst of Effingham, Mary Ann (Joe) Moon of Pana and Barbara Tharp of Altamont; stepdaughter, Angela (Kevin) Cordes of Montrose; sister, Dorothy Flynn of Beattyville, Ky.; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Cecil Tharp and Orear Tharp; grandson, Michael Logsdon; and stepson, Mark Hillhouse.
