---- — Jessie Lou Hooks, 85, of Mason, died at 4:33 a.m. Saturday, May 11, 2013, at Evergreen Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Effingham.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Asbury United Methodist Church, rural Mason, with the Rev. Ed. Wojnar officiating. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, Altamont. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, May 13, at Gieseking Funeral Home, Altamont. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice. Online condolences may be left at www.giesekingfh.com.

Jessie Lou was born Tuesday, Nov. 1, 1927, in Springfield, to Jessie and Birdie Smith Higgs. She married Charles O. Hooks on Aug. 2, 1952, in Altamont. He preceded her in death ob Feb. 27, 2011.

She was a 60-year member of Asbury United Methodist Church, where she served as a pianist and in many other capacities. Over the years, Jessie worked at the Altamont Garment Factory, Fedders and as a babysitter.

She tirelessly assisted on the family farm and enjoyed gardening and sewing and sharing the bounty from both her vegetable and flower gardens. She was known for her lillies.

She served as a Western Rooter 4-H leader and was a member of the Effingham County Home Extension, Order of the Eastern Star and Women’s Aglow. Jessie Lou had a very strong work ethic and always maintained a positive and optimistic outlook on life.

She is survived by her son, Dean (Sue) Hooks of Kirkwood, Mo.; daughter, Susan Hooks-Phillips of Altamont; brothers, Melvin (Mary) Higgs of Effingham and Leavitt (Edie) Higgs of Altamont; sisters, Wanda Phillips and Pauline (Kenny) Vail, both of Altamont, and Hilda Schumaker of Effingham; and grandchildren, Christopher Phillips of Chicago, Ashley and Caitlin Phillips, both of Altamont, and Charlie, Sam, Molly and Pete Hooks, all of Kirkwood, Mo.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Christine Wilcox.
