At an early age her family moved to Ada, Oklahoma, where she graduated from Ada High School and attended East Central State University, earning the Bachelor of Science Degree at the age of 19. After receiving her degree she taught at the high school level, instructing students almost the same age as she was.

Mrs. Cochonour was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church and was active as a Kindergarten Sunday School teacher for 20 years. She was also an active member of the United Methodist Women and the first president of that group when the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church merged in 1968. Mrs. Cochonour was a retired Casey School teacher and served a term as President of the Casey Teachers Association.
