Joseph Johnson

Joseph A. Johnson, 77, of Newton, went to be with his Lord, at 11:56 p.m. Wednesday April 24, 2013, at his residence after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Latona Church of Christ, Wheeler, with the Rev. Nate Hagan officiating. Burial will be in Trexler Cemetery, rural Newton. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the church with Masonic Rites at 7 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Lincolnland Hospice or Latona Church of Christ with envelopes available at the church. Pulliam Funeral Home, Robinson, is in charge of arrangements.

Born May 20, 1935, in Jasper County, he was the son of Tony W. and Floris L. (Wetherholt) Johnson-Zimmerman. On Oct. 3, 1958, he married Ilene (Igleheart) and she survives. He was employed by Illinois Central Railroad for 44 years as a conductor; served in the U.S. Army from 1955 – 1957; and was a faithful member of the Latona Church of Christ, Wheeler. Other memberships include Master Mason, Winterrowd Lodge 664, AF & AM; Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of St. Louis, Belleville; AINAD Shrine Temple, St. Louis; Jasper County Shrine Club; American Legion Post 20, Newton; Township Trustee, Wade Township, Jasper County for eight years.

Joe loved spending time with his family and friends, especially taking his kids and grandkids on vacations and cooking for a get-together. In Newton, he supported his grandkids during their athletic events as Newton Eagles and Saint Thomas Saints. While attending athletic events or out in public, Joe never met a stranger. When at home, he could be seen mowing his lawn, working in his weed-free garden, or keeping his truck spotless.

Survivors include his wife, Ilene Johnson of Newton; mother, Floris Johnson Zimmerman of Newton; sons and daughters-in-law, Gary Joe and Joyce Johnson of Newton; Scott Ray and Shelly Johnson of Newton; daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Ann Renee and Dane May of Newton; grandchildren, Will, Ty and Sydney May; Dylan and Taylor Johnson; Kristin Henry; Erica and John Johnson; brothers and spouses, Ronald and Tanya Johnson of Newton; David and Mary Johnson of Newton; sisters and spouses, Janice and Ken Gary of Cookeville, Tenn., Judith Addis of Olney, and Nancy Johnson of Newton; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Joe in death were his father, Tony W. Johnson; mother-in-law, Irene Ballew; brothers-in-law, Larry Cox and Jack Ballew; and sister-in-law, Rita Ballew.
