Merl Wayne Shamhart, age 76, of rural Wheeler, passed away at 1:24 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family.
Funeral services celebrating Merl’s life will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Blake-Wright Funeral Home in Dieterich, with Mike Knepper officiating. Burial will be in Bailey Cemetery near Latona, with full military rites by the Jasper Post 20 American Legion. Visitation will be held 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Merl was born Feb. 29, 1936, in Jasper County, the son of Perry and Gerlene (Lewis) Shamhart. He married Wilma Loy, June 15, 1959, in Jackson, Mich., and she survives. Merl served his county in the United States Army from 1956 to 1959 during the Korean Conflict.
Merl was a self employed truck driver and formerly owned the DS &G in Newton. Merl was a former member of the Winterrowd Masonic Lodge 664 and had been a Shriner. Merl enjoyed spending his time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed helping his sons with their passion of car racing.
Merl is survived by wife of 53 years, Wilma Shamhart of Wheeler; four sons, David (Debbie) Shamhart of Altamont, Jimmy Shamhart of Wheeler, Ed (Julie) Shamhart of Olney and Todd (Sherry) Shamhart of Dieterich; grandchildren, Dustin (Heather) Shamhart of Tyler, Texas, Josh (Julie) Shamhart of Altamont, Jessica (Anthony) Grobengieser of Altamont, Amanda Shamhart of Altamont, Ashley, Jordan and Kaitlyn Shamhart all of Dieterich; two great-grandchildren, Katlyn and Kirsten Shamhart of Tyler, Texas; brothers, Lester (Deloris) Shamhart of Wheeler, Clyde (Evelyn) Shamhart of Beecher City, Danny (Sharon) Shamhart of Mason; sisters, Shirley (Ronnie) Allen of Mason, Kathy (Pat) Hahn of Altamont.
Merl was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Kristen Shamhart; twin brother, Burl Shamhart; and a sister, Vickie Shamhart.
