Leonard B. Wernsing, 87, of Teutopolis, passed away at 6:14 p.m. Friday, April 19, 2013, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Teutopolis, with burial in St. Francis Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church with a 7:30 p.m. parish wake service, followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary. Memorials may be made to Teutopolis Grade School or Teutopolis American Legion Post 924. Bauer Funeral Home, Teutopolis, is assisting the family with arrangements. Leonard was born May 29, 1925, in Teutopolis, the son of Ferd and Anna (Bertram) Wernsing. He married Jeanette E. Swingler on May 29, 1947, and she preceded him in death in 2011. Leonard served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a lifetime hardware salesman. Leonard was also a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis, Teutopolis Knights of Columbus Council 2874, Teutopolis Lions Club and the Teutopolis American Legion Post 924.
Leonard is survived by one son, William L. “Bill” of Effingham; two daughters, Susan (Jerry) Brummer and Christie (Doug) Stephens, both of Teutopolis; four grandchildren, Monica Brummer, Christopher (Jenny) Brummer, Kimberly (Jimy) Vigue and Ross Stephens; three great-grandchildren, Amelia and Corin Brummer and Lena Vigue; and one sister, Florence Koester of Teutopolis.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jeanette; son, Philip; and two brothers, Robert and Harry.
