Dean Hamilton

EFFINGHAM — Dean O. Hamilton, 94, of Effingham, formerly of Connersville, Ind., passed away at 9:55 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, at St. Anthony Memorial Hospital, Effingham.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Grand Avenue United Methodist Church in Connersville, Ind. Burial will be in Dale Cemetery, Connersville. Visitation will be one hour prior to services  Monday at the church.

Dean was born Nov. 27, 1918, in Lyonsville, Ind., the son of the late Otto A. and Ruth (Baker) Hamilton. He married Alma J. (Alley) on Aug. 8, 1942, in Hattiesburg, Miss., and she preceded him in death on Oct. 2, 1999. Dean graduated from Connersville High School in 1937. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the Army for 4 1/2 years and was in the largest group of young men to ever be drafted from Connersville. He started his basic training in Shelby, Miss., and worked his way up the ranks from company clerk through Master Sergeant to First Sergeant. Dean was stationed in Verdun, France and Reykjavik, Iceland. He was a member of the Grand Avenue United Methodist Church, where he enjoyed the friendships that he made in the 12th Night Sunday School class and he also sang in the choir. Dean was also a member of the Warren Lodge and Scottish Rite.

Mr. Hamilton retired from the Connersville Post Office as a mail carrier, after 25 years of service. He then moved to Effingham in 2000, to be closer to his daughter. He resided at the Voelker Home in Altamont for the past three years. With the help of a very competent and loving staff, he was able to maintain a happy and fulfilling life.

Dean is survived by his daughter, Ellen E. Claerbout of Effingham; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Cashin of Augusta, Ga., Andy Claerbout of Atlanta and Ann Erickson of Anchorage, Alaska; eight great-grandchildren; and one niece, Judy Lane of Richmond, Ind.
