---- — Dorothy Mae (Corrie) Schafer, 92, of Newton, passed peacefully after 92 years of a faith-filled life of God, family and community on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013, at her residence.
Visitation will be from 10 am to 12:30 pm Saturday at Short Funeral Home, Mt. Carmel. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Allendale Cemetery. The family requests memorial contributions be made to the church of your choice.
Dorothy (Dot) Corrie was born Friday July 15, 1921 in Orio, the daughter of Wendell B. and Naoma Litherland Corrie. She married Paul Schafer Monday, Aug. 1, 1938 in Lawrenceville. Paul preceded her in death on Aug. 14, 2007. They had just celebrated their 69th anniversary.
Dorothy’s life was spent in dedication to her churches where she played organ and piano for numerous services over a 70 year period: Wabash Presbyterian Church in Oreo, Allendale Christian Church, Mt. Carmel Christian Church and Grace Methodist Church of Newton. Daily Bible devotions were never skipped! Her devotion to her family included many handicrafts, including quilting, sewing, and crocheting sweaters and hangers. Believing idle hands were a waste, she was constantly working on a project or doing Word Find puzzles. She joined her great-grandchildren on their four-wheelers and even rode on a Harley this year! Her flowerbeds were a delight to behold. She served as Allendale’s Postmaster and moved the post office to her garage after the tornado so there was no interruption of service.
In 2010 she moved to Newton to reside at The Villas of Holly Brook, where she continued to play music and be a friend to all. The residents and staff of The Villas were all so kind to her and offered prayers and visits when she became ill. The ministers from Mt. Carmel, Orio, and Newton were such a comfort to Dorothy as they prayed with her on numerous occasions. The family is so thankful for all the kindnesses shown to Dorothy and her family during these last few months.
Heaven has certainly gained an angel!
She is survived by two sons, Dr. Robert (Carol) Schafer and Michael (Betty Jo) Schafer, both of Newton; one daughter, Paula Gaye Schafer of Allendale; grandchildren, Corrie Schafer of Westchester, Keri Jo (John) Walters of Folsom, Calif., Kent (Michelle) Schafer of Yale, and John Paul Davis and Justin Davis of Allendale; and 10 great-grandchildren. Dorothy’s sisters, Helen Agnes Gronning of Mt. Carmel and Mary Clark of Sparks, Nev. also survive.
Dorothy Mae was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one sister Rose Kieffer and one brother William F. Corrie.
