Norma Jean Springer, a former Effingham resident, died at her home in Denton, Texas, on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013.
A memorial service will be held at De Berry Funeral Home in Denton, Texas, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that memorial donations be made to the charity of choice, in her memory.
Jean was born on Jan. 14, 1936, in Springfield, the daughter of John D. Cain and Norma J. (Althoff) Cain. Jean graduated from St. Anthony High School in 1954, and graduated as a RN from St. John’s Mercy in St. Louis. She married Donald W. Springer in Effingham on Oct. 18, 1958, at St. Anthony of Padua Church, Effingham. She worked as an RN in Effingham, Elgin and Rockford until 1978.
In the late 70s, Jean developed a rare “adult onset” form of SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) that progressively robbed her of her mobility. She also lost her vision and voice. Her strength through her progressive muscle-loss has inspired everyone who loves her. Both Jean and her husband have set a beautiful example for their children to follow. Jean will live on forever in our hearts. She can see us and we can hear her singing while she is dancing in Heaven.
She is survived by her husband, Don (Topper) of Denton, Texas; children, Donna J. Springer (Sue) of Addison, Texas, Debbie E. Evans-Lombe of Austin, Texas, David W. Springer of Garland, Texas, Dianne L. Springer (Linda) of Denton, Texas, Daniel W. Springer (Theresa) of Denton, Texas, and Dawn E. Jarusinsky (Ed) of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, David W. Springer (Samantha) of Jacksonville, Fla., Elaine M. Evans-Lombe of Austin, Texas, Megan N. Usrey (Travis) of Pottsboro, Texas, and Caitlyn P. Springer of Garland, Texas; grandbaby, Donald W. Springer of Denton, Texas, to be born in October 2013; two great-grandchildren, Braylin and Emily Usrey of Pottsboro, Texas.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents; brother, James E. Cain; and son-in-law, David G. Evans-Lombe.
