---- — David Wayne Beals Sr., 62, of Stewardson, passed away at 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2013, in his home surrounded by his family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Brummerstedt Funeral Home in Stewardson. Pastor Kathy Lewis will officiate. Flag presentation will be made by Stewardson American Legion Post 611. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 2., at the funeral home. The family requests casual attire. Burial will be in Stewardson Cemetery. Memorials may be made in David’s memory to the American Cancer Society or Crossroads Cancer Center of Effingham. Online condolences may be made at www.lockartgreenfuneralhome.com.

David was born Dec. 22, 1950, in Stewardson, the son of Chester and Freda Fern (Long) Beals.

David was a graduate of Stewardson-Strasburg High School in the Class of 1969. He married Rayleen Summerton on Aug. 18, 1970, in Stewardson.

He worked as a mixer of bread products and retired from Lenders Bagels Co. in Mattoon. He was employed there for 37 years as it went through several name changes (Kraft Foods, Kellogg Foods, Aurora Foods and, finally, Lenders Bagels).

He served his country with honor in Vietnam as a combat infantryman in the United States Army. David was awarded two Purple Hearts and the Bronze Star. He was a member of American Legion Post 611 of Stewardson for nearly 40 years, and was affiliated with the United Methodist Church of Stewardson.

David was an avid outdoors-man who loved fishing and hunting. He was passionate about riding his motorcycle. He treasured his family and was devoted to his many friends.

Surviving are his wife, Rayleen; son, David (friend, Rachel Davis) Beals Jr. of Stewardson; sisters, Maxine (husband, Louis) Kaufman of Stewardson, Nancy (husband, Wayne) Mingus of Stewardson; brothers, Jackie Beals of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Charlie Beals of Mattoon; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Larry Beals and Gary Beals.
