Carl J. Smith, 82, of St. Elmo, passed away at 6:32 a.m. Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, in Friendship Manor Nursing Home, St. Elmo.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in C & A Pagel Funeral Home, St. Elmo with burial in Maplewood Cemetery, St. Elmo, with military graveside rites by St. Elmo American Legion Post 420. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Friendship Manor Nursing Home, Parkinson’s Disease Foundation or donor’s choice.
Carl was born on June 12, 1931 in Effingham, the son of Carl C. and Alice L. (Dye) Smith. He married Carol J. Musgrave in Brownstown on Feb. 26, 1955.
Carl was the owner and operator of Carl’s Auto Body in Altamont for 10 years and 12 years in St. Elmo. He was a member of the First Christian Church in St. Elmo, a member of the Altamont VFW and St. Elmo American Legion Post 420.
He is survived by his wife, Carol of St. Elmo; son, Carl E. (wife Kim) of Lake Charles, La.; daughter, Carla S. (husband Bruce) Briscoe of Findlay; brother, Bill Smith of Evansville, Ind.; grandchildren, Carly (husband Aaron) Cook of Monrovia, Md., Chancy (husband Josh) Chestnut of Decatur, Ryan (wife Jade) Smith of Lake Charles, La., and Kyle (wife Abby) Smith of Austin, Texas; great-grandchildren, Caitlyn and Clayton Cook of Monrovia, Md., and Annabelle and Oliver Smith of Lake Charles, La.
Carl is preceded in death by his parents; son, Clyde James Smith in infancy; sister, Mary Winkler; and sister-in-law, Velma Smith.
