Lloyd Matson

Lloyd L. “Pete” Matson, 93, of Newton, passed away at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 4, 2013, at Newton Rest Haven, Newton.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home, Newton, with Larry Matson officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Newton. Visitation will be held two hours before the service. In loving memory of Pete, memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church or Jasper County Senior Citizens Center. Lloyd L., better known as “Pete,” was born April 14, 1920, on Love’s Ford Hill overlooking the Embarras River in Jasper County, the son of Ralph Dayton and Grace Pauline (Bower) Matson. He married Wanda Wagner on March 3, 1938, in Jasper County, and they just recently celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary.

Pete was a farmer, carpenter and retired from E.R. Moore in Newton after 23 years of service. In 1952 Pete and Wanda bought a farm in the river bottoms west of Rose Hill and farmed there for many years.

Pete served his country in the United States Army during World War II.

Pete was baptized in the Embarras River at the Love’s Ford Bridge west of Falmouth. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and Jasper Post 20 American Legion.

Pete enjoyed gardening, bowling and fishing on the Embarras River in Jasper County.

Pete is survived by his wife of 75 years, Wanda Matson of Newton; three children, Carol L. (Larry) Thurman of Arcola, Larry G. “Red” (Beverly) Matson of Newton and James D. (Caroline) Matson of Newton; four sisters, Marjorie Foltz of Newton, Neva June Bozen of Evergreen Park, Mary D. Waddell of Robinson and Ruth Carpenter of Newton; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Rupert, Glenn, Daniel J. and Dewey G. Matson; two sisters, Flavia Gowran and Billie Kay Woodard; and a granddaughter, Joni Johnson.
