---- — Homer Eldon French, age 88, passed away Friday, June 21, 2013, at Evergreen Nursing Home, Effingham.
Funeral services for Homer will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Crain Funeral Home, Newton, with the Rev. Ken Miller officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 until 8 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Trexler Cemetery, rural Newton, with military rites by Jasper Post 20 of the American Legion. Memorial gifts may be made to the Jasper County Antique Tractor Club or to the Kedron United Methodist Church.
Homer was born on May 17, 1925, in Jasper County, the son of Homer Cecil French and Mary Tate French Blankenbaker. On May 31, 1949, Homer married Doris Louise Chapman and she survives.
He served our country in the U.S. Army. He was a lifelong farmer and livestock dealer. In his early years, he hauled livestock for Public Livestock Company. Homer was a member of the Latona Church of Christ. He attended the Kedron United Methodist Church and was a member of the Jasper County Antique Tractor Club. Homer enjoyed collecting and restoring International Tractors, fishing and collecting milk cans. His greatest joy was being a grandpa to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Homer will be loved and remembered by his wife of 64 years, Doris French of Newton; sons, David French and Steve French, wife Sandy, both of Newton; grandchildren, Laura Wright, husband Michael of Casey, Mike French, wife Sarah of Dieterich, Pamela French of Effingham, and Heather French of Stoy; stepgrandchildren, Shawn Klie, wife Tracy of Chamberlin, Ariz., Shannon Klier, wife Rachel of Midland, Texas, and Shane Klier, wife Rhiannon of Newton; 10 great-grandchildren.
His parents; daughter-in-law, Dee French; infant grandchild, Lea Ann French; two brothers, Harold French and Herbert Dean French; and sister, Esther Johnson, preceded him in death.
