Mary Logan

NEWTON — Mary Elizabeth Kessler Logan, 95, of Newton, passed away at 7:05 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, Effingham.

    Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Ste. Marie, with the Rev. Al Kemme celebrating mass. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Ste. Marie. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. In loving memory of Mary, memorials may be made for Masses. Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home, Newton, is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.blakefh.com.

    Mary was born April 17, 1917, in Bicknell, Ind., the daughter of Harry and Jane (Brown) Loving of Willow Hill. At that time, her father worked in a coal mine known as the American No. 1, located in Bicknell, Ind. When she was 10 years old, her father was killed in a coal mine accident; she went to live with her grandparents, George and Pearl Brown. On Sept. 10, 1935, she married Wilmer Kessler at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Ste. Marie. After their marriage, they resided on a farm between Ste. Marie and Newton, where they farmed most of their married life. Later, Mary worked at E.R. Moore garment factory for 10 years. After retiring from farming they moved to Newton. Wilmer preceded Mary in death on June 20, 1981. Mary married Clive Logan of Edgewood, in September of 1984, and he preceded her in death in January of 1994. Mary lived her last 10 years at Newton Rest Haven Nursing Home. She always had a smile and everyone that knew Mary loved her. She had a heart filled with compassion and caring for everyone.

    Mary is survived by her daughter, Betty Niemeyer and son-in-law, James Niemeyer of Evansville, Ind.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

    Mary was preceded in death by her parents; son, Donald Kessler; granddaughter, Aimee Kessler; two sisters, Ruth Murphy and Louise Stauss; and a brother, George Loving.
