Harlan Mellendorf

DIETERICH —     Harlan W. Mellendorf, 91, of Dieterich, Lucas Township, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2012, at 3:15 p.m. at Evergreen Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Effingham.

    Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Louisville, (Effingham - Clay County Line) where he was a life-long member. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be today from 4 to 7 p.m. at Hall Funeral Chapel, Effingham, and from 10 a.m. until service time Friday at the church. Memorials may be made to the St. Louis Concordia Seminary Student Fund, Alzheimer’s Association and American Cancer Society. Online condolences may be left at www.hallfuneralchapel.com.

    Harlan Wilbert Mellendorf was born Nov. 27, 1921, in Lucas Township (Effingham - Clay County Line), in his parents’ house, the son of Albert and Louise (Traub) Mellendorf. He graduated from Eberle School. Later he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp near Le Grange in 1941. He was drafted into the Army in 1945 and sent to Korea. There he was severely injured in a Troop Carrier accident in 1946. In 1950 he became a bus driver for the Dieterich Public School. Later he started to farm and began working at Fedders. He retired from Fedders in 1984 and then from farming in 2000. He was a member of St. John’s Men’s Club, a lifetime member of Dieterich American Legion and DAV in Effingham, Sod Busters in Louisville and was a Dieterich Ruritan. He married Bonetia Catherine Bannick April 14, 1967. He was a very loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend. He enjoyed his farming very much and loved traveling, having traveled to all of the U.S. states but Alaska.

    Survivors include his wife, Bonnie; son, Joey (Stacia) Mellendorf of Neoga; daughters, Connie (Tom) Black of Mission Hills, Kan., Sheri (Ray) Simmons of Albers, Debra (Eric) Burch, Effingham; grandchildren, Steven A. (Alyson) and Nathan Mellendorf, Michael (Sonja) and Amy Simmons, Jenna Mellendorf and Mariah and Lance Burch; brother, Leroy (Natalie) Mellendorf, Effingham; sisters, Violet Roberts, Effingham; and Geraldine (Delbert) Mundt, Dieterich.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Louise Mellendorf; brothers, Eugene and Ardon Mellendorf; sister, Alberta Garbe; and sons, Douglas and Steven V. Mellendorf.
