---- — Melvin Eugene “Gene” Ohnesorge, 78, of Stewardson, passed away at 8:46 a.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2013, in his home surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Stewardson Community Center in Stewardson. The Revs. C. W. Lewis and Kathy Lewis will officiate. Burial will be in Stewardson Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the community center. The family requests casual attire. Memorials may be given in Gene’s memory to the Stewardson Lion’s Club for the annual tractor pull or Lincolnland Hospice. Brummerstedt Funeral Home in Stewardson is entrusted with arrangements. Gene was born Dec. 27, 1934, in Shumway, the son of William and Mamie Knierim Ohnesorge. He married Betty Kessler on July 19, 1953 in Stewardson.

Gene was a lifelong grain and livestock farmer and for three years, was employed at Norge Corp. in Effingham. In retirement, he continued to work for the Stewardson Equity.

He served on the Stewardson-Strasburg School Board of Directors for nine years and the Prairie Township Board of Directors for several years, and was a member of the Shelby County Farm Bureau.

Gene was an tractor pull enthusiast and participated in events all over central Illinois.

Surviving are his wife, Betty; children, Kim (Larry) Montgomery and Cathy (Jeff) Montgomery, both of Windsor, Todd Ohnesorge of Stewardson, Robin (John) Storm of Effingham, Angie (Joe) Flinn of Dieterich and Sonya Overbeck of Neoga; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren on the way; sisters, Ione (Keith) Beals and Ruth (Max) White, both of Effingham, and Sandra (John) LeCrone of Xenia; brothers, George (Deloris) Ohnesorge of Beecher City and Roger (Nancy) Ohnesorge of Altamont; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Roland Ohnesorge; sister, Eileen Wenthe; and three siblings at birth.
