Steven Reed

Steven Wayne Reed, 87, of Altamont, formerly of Beecher City, passed away at 11:14 a.m. Friday, July 19, 2013, in Effingham Ambulatory Surgical Center, Effingham.

A graveside memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Friday in Springhill Cemetery, Loudon Township, rural Beecher City, with military rites by Altamont VFW Post 7676 with Lloyd Durbin officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or Disabled American Veterans. Arrangements are entrusted to Lockart-Green Funeral Home, Beecher City. Steve was born Nov. 16, 1925, in Loudon Township, Fayette County, the son of Cleve and Kathryn Durbin Reed. At age 17, Steve went to work at Inland Steel Co., Indiana Harbor, Ind., shortly before joining the United States Navy, serving honorably in the South Pacific during World War II. Upon returning home, he farmed while being the owner/operator of Reed Building Service in Beecher City. Steve was a life member and former Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7676 of Altamont. He married Berneice (Holding) Durbin on Jan. 8, 1983, in Strasburg.

Surviving are his wife, Berneice; children, Judy (Ed) Hanley of Moweaqua, James (Cheryl) Reed of Beecher City, Michael (Patty) Reed of Stewardson, Sue Livingston of Neoga, Dennis Reed of Beecher City, Bradley (Donna) Reed of Beecher City, Glen Reed of Shumway, Barbara (Cary) Storm of Stewardson, Connie (David) Birch of Louisville, Joyce (Tim) Fuesting of Thorntown, Ind., Richard Reed of Effingham, Roger Reed of Effingham, and Ronald (Becky) Reed of Beecher City; 23 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Upon marrying Berneice Durbin, Steve was blessed with an additional seven children, Lloyd (Mary) Durbin of Stewardson, Fred (Pauline) Durbin of Strasburg, David (Clara Ann) Durbin of Effingham, Gary (Deanna) Durbin of Gays, Frieda (Guy) Juhnke of Effingham, Marilyn (Kenneth) Kessler of Stewardson, and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Steve leaves behind one sibling, Alfred “Pete” (Wilma) Reed of Shumway; sisters-in-law, Irene Reed of St. Elmo, and Evelyn Reed of Altamont.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Mary Reed; son, Gary Reed; son-in-law, David Livingston; grandsons, Gregory Todd Hanley, Troy Durbin and Paul Durbin; great-grandchildren, Brittany Butler and Jacob Henkleman; great-great-grandson, Aidan Atkins; sister, Madonna (Eugene) Paldy; brothers, Joe (Bessie) Reed, Gene Reed, Preslie Reed, Leslie Reed and Ray Reed; and two sisters in infancy.
