Louis Joseph Greuel, 83, of rural Effingham, peacefully entered into eternal life at 2:25 am Saturday, July 13, 2013, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, Effingham.
Funeral services celebrating Louis’ life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Sigel with Father Bud DeGrand officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hall Funeral Chapel, Effingham. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Church Cemetery in Green Creek. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ballard Nature Center, Effingham County Humane Society or the donor’s choice. Condolences may be left online at www.hallfuneralchapel.com.
Mr. Greuel was born Jan. 12, 1930, in Effingham County, the son of Joseph F. and Florence (Sur) Greuel. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On April 16, 1955, he married Norma A. Michels. To this union were born eight children. As a lifelong dairy and grain farmer in Green Creek, Louis never met a stranger. His caring nature was evident in his love for his family, friends and neighbors. He enjoyed playing pinochle, telling stories, and sharing his great sense of humor.
Louis is survived by his wife, Norma; daughters, Shirley (David) McEvers and Delores (Brian) Hartke, both of Effingham, Nancy (Greg) Reynolds of Odin, and Lisa Braun of Twin Lakes, Wis.; sons, Dean (Diane), Dale (Michele) and Kurt (Karan), all of Effingham; 29 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Leonard (Rosemary) Greuel of Sigel; one sister, Margaret Flood of Jewett; brother-in-law, Harry Ludwig of Neoga; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; infant son, John; sisters, Ruth Stodden, Hilda Dasenbrock, Mildred Ludwig, Mary Michels, and a brother and sister who died in infancy.
