Mack Kitten

TEUTOPOLIS — Mack B. Kitten, 78, of Teutopolis, died at 1:05 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 2014, at his home surrounded by his loving and devoted wife, six children, and 16 grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Teutopolis. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday at the church in Teutopolis with a 4:45 p.m. parish wake service. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice. Mack was born July 23, 1935, in Teutopolis, the son of Harry and Agnes (Habing) Kitten. He married Anna R. Hofman in 1966 and she survives. As a young man, he aspired to priesthood and attended St. Joseph Seminary, but ultimately realized that the seminary life was not his calling, and he missed his dog. He attended college at Eastern Illinois University; then traveled to Mainz, Germany, where he received his Master's degree in German language. Mack taught German for several years at Illinois Valley Community College and at Lake Land College and later retired from Illinois Department of Employment Security. He was an avid reader and storyteller of Teutopolis' history and people. Mack was well known for his charismatic and enthusiastic joke-telling. He possessed an innate ability to influence others, especially his children and grandchildren and was always a voice for equality.

Mack spent his life focused on taking care of his wife, children, and grandchildren. He built his home in rural Teutopolis, and was able to provide a warm and loving environment in which to nurture his family. Many memories were created at the Kitten pond with family and friends. Mack was a member of the Teutopolis Knights of Columbus. He was active in the cancer day parades and a big proponent of caring for others. Over the past 10 years, he enjoyed visiting the sick and fellow cancer patients. Mack will be sorely missed by all who knew him. His memories will live on as will his good intentions and everything he stood for.

Mack is survived by his wife, Anna of Teutopolis; daughter, Katrina (Carlos) De Romana of Castle Rock, Colo.; sons, Bernie (Anne) of Carmel, Ind., Leo (Debbie) of Teutopolis, and daughters, Theresia Gidcumb of Champaign, Mary Wendt of Teutopolis, and Suzy Kitten of Greenville, N.C.; 16 grandchildren, Ethan, Caleb, Blake, Elena, Lauren, Donovan, Kennedey, Andrea, Benjamin, Presley, Paris, Petra, Archer, Carlos, Chloe, and Isadora.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Jane Thoele.
