Ruth “Joan” Mankin, 93, of Effingham, passed away at 1:05 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at Evergreen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Effingham.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. today, July 18, at Centenary United Methodist Church, Effingham, with Dr. Joe Scheets officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Effingham. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. today prior to services at the church. Services are in the care of Johnson Funeral Home, Effingham.

Joan was born on Feb. 6, 1921, in Fairbanks Township, Sullivan County, Indiana, the daughter of Milton J. and Maud (Pogue) Drake. She married Hubert L. Mankin in 1941 in Terre Haute, Indiana, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 26, 1990.
Joan was a retired teacher’s aid for Effingham Unit 40 Kindergarten Center. She had been an active member of Centenary United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Green Thumb Garden Club, DAR, and a 67 year member of Eastern Star. Her service contributions in the past have also included work for St. Anthony’s Hospital and Cunningham Children’s Home in Urbana.
She loved quilting, sewing, gardening, baking and traveling. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Joan is survived by her three children, Michael (wife, Millie) Mankin of Sacramento, California, Marcia (husband, Fred deceased) Dow of Hobart, Indiana, and Mark (wife, Connie) Mankin of Altamont; grandchildren, Sara (husband, Charles) Hutchison of Pekin, Amanda Dow of Hobart, and Adam Mankin of Altamont; great-grandchildren, Sean and Scarlet Hutchison; and sister, Marilyn Hall of Fairbanks, Indiana.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers; and son-in-law.
