Gary L. DePoister, 70, of Traverse City, Michigan, formerly of Effingham, passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2014, at Metro Health Hospital in Wyoming, Michigan.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Centenary United Methodist Church, Effingham, with Dr. Joe Scheets and Larry Sims officiating. Cremation rites will be accorded after the services. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Services are in the care of Johnson Funeral Home, Effingham. Memorials may be made in memory of Gary to Juvenile Diabetes, AC Paws, P.O. Gary was born on Jan. 5, 1944, in Vandalia, the son of Harl and Bernetta (Rodgers) DePoister. He married Linda Ohnesorge on Sept. 5, 1964, in Effingham, and she survives. Gary was the owner of DePoister Drilling Company. He was an oilfield consultant and worked in the oil and gas industry throughout the United States. He was a past board member of Illinois Oil & Gas Association and a member of the Elks. Gary loved his family, friends, traveling, RVing, golf, pickleball and boating in the Great Lakes and the Caribbean. He was “Dad” to many of his children’s friends and “Pappy” to so many of the grandkids friends.
Gary is survived by his loving wife, Linda DePoister of Traverse City, Michigan; son, Mike (Cyn Schaefer) DePoister of Effingham; daughter, Angie (Jeff) MacDermaid of Lake Ann, Michigan; grandchildren, Derek (Erica Medders) DePoister of Mt. Vernon, Keeli DePoister of Lake Ann, Michigan, Abbey DePoister of Effingham, Dylan DePoister of Effingham, and Bailey MacDermaid of Lake Ann, Michigan; great-granddaughter, Jocie DePoister of Mt. Vernon; and beloved dog, Meaghan.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
