---- — J. Carl Heiden, 78, of Effingham, passed away at 11:58 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hall Funeral Chapel, Effingham, with the Rev. Timothy Hubert officiating. Visitation was held from 10 a.m. until service time. Burial was in Stewardson Cemetery with military rites. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or the donor’s choice. Condolences may be left online at www.hallfuneralchapel.com.
Carl was born Oct. 1, 1934, in Effingham County, the son of William “Bill” and Hester (Barker) Heiden. He first married Billie Jean Bryan on April 17, 1956, and later married Catherine Appelt Kincaid on March 3, 1979, at Trinity Lutheran Church, and she survives. Carl was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Shumway. He served in the United States Army from May 27, 1957, to May 6, 1959. Carl was co-owner of Coast to Coast Hardware in Effingham and The Fashion House in Altamont. He also worked at Blaw Knox in Mattoon and farmed.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine; sons, Kevin (Rebecca) Heiden of Clinton and Kenton Heiden of Clearwater, Fla.; stepdaughters, Debra (Pete) Spence and Sherri (Chuck) Bourgeois of Effingham; grandson, David Levitt; stepgrandsons, Nicholas Spence, Lucas Spence and Sean Bourgeois; stepgranddaughter, Chelsea Spence; great-granddaughters, Alexia and Aimee Levitt of Effingham; sisters, Marie (Leon) Ruwe of Springfield and Dorothy Weber of Stasburg; and brother-in-law; Jim Bales of Sullivan.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Melba Bales and brother-in-law Mike Weber.
