Wayne Whitaker, 93, of Effingham, formerly of rural Neoga, died at 10:05 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2013, at Aspen Creek, Effingham.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church, Neoga, with the Rev. Debbie Reese officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and one hour before services Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Long Point Cemetery near Neoga, with military services conducted by the Cumberland County Veterans Post 4598. Swengel-O’Dell Funeral Home, Neoga, is in charge of arrangements. Wayne was born June 18, 1920, in Cumberland County, the son of U. Edgar and Lucretia (Gray) Whitaker. Wayne married Lucille Plummer on Nov. 26, 1942, in Paso Robles, Calif. Lucille, his wife of 68 years, passed away Sept. 27, 2010. Wayne served in the United States Army during World War II and was a retired farmer.
Mr. Whitaker leaves one son, the Rev. Jim Whitaker (wife, Rhonda) of Neoga; five daughters, Sheryl Brandenburg (husband, Victor) of rural Neoga, Carol Haskett (husband, David) of Mount Juliet, Tenn., Cathy Pankey (husband, Don) of Neoga, Cindy Mendenhall (husband, Bret) of Greensboro, Ga., and Dana Homann (husband, Rick) of Charleston; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
Mr. Whitaker was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lucille Whitaker; two brothers, George and Loren Whitaker; and one granddaughter, Brittany Mendenhall.
