---- — Michael Woods, 62, of Marshall, passed away at 11:55 p.m. Friday June 28, 2013, at his home, surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Blake-Buchanan Funeral Home in Newton, with Larry Matson officiating. Burial will be in Honey Cemetery in Bogota. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service. In loving memory of Michael, memorials may be made to Newton Southern Baptist Church. Online condolences may be left at www.blakefh.com.

Michael was born Jan. 18, 1951, in Effingham, the son of Lloyd Frederick Woods and Phylis Highshoe. He grew up in Bogota, raised by his grandparents, Charles and Lucy Woods.

Michael was a 1969 graduate of Newton Community High School. Michael married Donna Faltimier on Dec. 12, 1970, and to this union, two sons were born.

After graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps, serving from April 1, 1970, to July 31, 1974, in Cherry Point, N.C.; he earned the rank of E5 sergeant.

Michael returned to Illinois and attended Olney Central College, obtaining an Associate of Science in zoology. He went on to attend Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, graduating in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science in botany.

Michael spent most of his life in the painting industry, holding various positions from laborer to superintendent. In 2006, he retired from the United States Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore.

Most recently, he served our Lord Jesus Christ as pastor of the Southern Baptist Church in Newton. He received his certificate to preach in August 2012. After retirement, he enjoyed spending time on his property in Romney, W.Va.

He had many interests, but studying God’s truth and spending time with his family were his highest priorities. He also enjoyed spending time outdoors, mushroom hunting, gardening, carpentry and playing a game of horseshoes.

Michael is survived by his sons, Fred (Tawne) Woods of Marshall and Danny (Bev) Woods of Norton, Va.; grandchildren, Gracie Lynn Woods, Tanner Michael Woods and Lucy Kaye Woods; and sister, Shelia Kollar.

Michael was preceded in death by his brother, Curtis Pierson; his parents, Lloyd Frederick Woods and Phylis Highshoe Ernest; and grandparents, Charles and Lucy Woods.

Michael will be remembered for his toughness and desire to share God’s word.
