Michael C. Mitchell, 52, of Effingham, passed away at 10 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at his home after a courageous battle with ALS.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Effingham. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery, Effingham. A parish wake service will be held at 3:30 p.m. followed by visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the church. Services are under the care of Johnson Funeral Home, Effingham. Michael was born on March 24, 1961, in Glasgow, Mont., the son of Thomas and Barbara (Howard) Mitchell. He married Conny Hawickhorst on Jan. 19, 1980, and she survives. Mike was an employee of IDOT in Effingham. He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church and Effingham Knights of Columbus Council 665. He coached various sports at St. Anthony schools. Mike was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather, and always very proud of “his girls.” He was an avid Illini and Cardinal fan.
Mike is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Conny; daughters, Kelli (Zachary) Bishop of Edwardsville, Stacia (Jason) Semple of Effingham and Anna Mitchell of Effingham; granddaughters, Elise and Edie Bishop and Elana, and twins Nina and Sylvia Semple; parents, Tom and Barb Mitchell of Effingham; sister, Julie (Ryan) Ragland of Effingham; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a nephew, Lucas Ragland; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bob and Becky Hawickhorst.
