---- — Gene L. Sears, 85, passed away at 6:20 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, at his residence.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today, Sept. 24, at Delhomme Funeral Home Chapel of the Flowers with the Rev. Richard Humphries, Pastor of Asbury United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will take place in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Gene M. Sears, Frank Sauter, Bill Pack, Phillip Miller, George Marcotte, Daniel Mod and Steve Neiers. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Asbury Building Fund, 101 Live Oak Street Lafayette, La. 70503 or Hospice of Acadiana 2600 Johnson Street, Suite 200 Lafayette, La. 70503. He was born Sept. 9, 1928, to Roy Sears and Esther Sears. Gene was a very proud veteran, having served two tours in North and South Korea during the war. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the VFW. Gene was employed by Carter Oil Company, now Exxon, in 1949 and worked there for 40 years. Following his retirement from Exxon, he established himself as a petroleum consultant for another 10 years. Gene was very fond of animals, especially his cat, Conway.
His family would like to give heartfelt thanks to his caregivers Peggy Melvin and Angel Roy for their extraordinary care and compassion for the last two months of his life. They would also like to thank Hospice of Acadiana and nurse Jo, and his church family at Asbury Methodist. He will be laid to rest next to his wife and son at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
He is survived by his daughter, Jaymie Sears; his son, Gene M. Sears and wife, Stacy; daughter, Melanie Sauter and husband, Frank; granddaughter, Kristy Sears; two stepgrandchildren, Daniel and Meagan Mod; the love of his life, great-grandson, Noah Sears; brother, Vern Sears and wife, Jerri; brother-in-law, Charles Cain and wife, Norma.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lois Mae Cain Sears of 60 years; son, James Ward Sears; brothers, Russell Sears and Robert Sears.
