Esther F. Walls, 97, of Effingham, passed away at 5:05 a.m. Monday, Sept. 16, 2013, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, Effingham.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Effingham, with the Rev. Ted Gall officiating. Burial will be in Watson Cemetery, Watson. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Johnson Funeral Home, Effingham. Memorials may be made to Effingham County Humane Society. Online condolences may be left at www.johnsonandsonsfh.com.
Esther was born on July 10, 1916, in Effingham County, the daughter of Fred and Lydia (Brauer) Heidbreder. She married Melvin Walls on Nov. 1, 1944, in Effingham, and he preceded her in death on July 30, 1980. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Effingham; Effingham DAV Chapter 7 Effingham VFW Post 1769 and American Legion Post 120 Auxiliary. She worked as a seamstress at the Illinois Glove Factory before her retirement. She loved music, playing the piano, dancing and gardening. Esther had a great fondness for animals, especially her faithful bulldog, Sporty.
Esther is survived by her sons, Kenneth (Bertha) Walls, John (fiancee, Vicki Osteen) Walls and James “Dale” (Donna “Pauline”) Walls, all of Effingham; 10 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Melvin; grandsons, Kenneth Walls Jr. and Clayton Dale McWhorter; brother, Clarence Heidbreder; and sister, Wilma Webster.
