James Bemis, 80, of rural Sigel, went to be with the Lord on Friday morning, Oct. 18, 2013, at the Lutheran Care Center in Altamont.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sigel with the Rev. Glenn L. Strohschein officiating. Visitation is from 1 p.m. until service time at the church. Burial will be in the St. Paul’s Cemetery in Sigel. Services are in care of Hall Funeral Chapel in Effingham.

James was born on Oct. 29, 1932, the son of Willis and Emma Blivernicht Bemis in Sigel, IL, Shelby County. Jim was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sigel. He graduated from Stewardson-Strasburg High School in 1951, the first class to graduate from the consolidated district. After graduation, he enlisted in the Air Force where he was given the nickname “Chief”. After his honorable discharge, he went to Eastern Illinois University and earned a B.S. in Education. He began teaching high school at Farmersville and later at Raymond when the districts consolidated. Jim earned a Master’s Degree from the U. of I. and continued teaching math. Later Jim taught computer classes at Raymond High School and at Lincolnland Community College. After his retirement, he moved back to the family farm and spent many wonderful years farming and visiting with family and friends.
Jim is survived by family and friends that will dearly miss hearing his stories and spending time with him.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
