Richard Lee Schaefer, 70, of Fairview Heights, died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Belleville.
A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Kalmer Memorial Services, on Rt. 50 between Lebanon and O’Fallon. After the visitation, his remains will be cremated. He was born Dec. 27, 1942, in Lebanon, the son of the late Clifford and Ruth (Burke) Schaefer. He married Rhonda Problys Oct. 10, 1964. She survives.
Also surviving are two children, Leslie (Michael) Wendling of Altamont, and Richard A. (Sheila) Schaefer of Chicago; four grandchildren, Michele (Brett) Tappendorf of Kahoka, Mo., Sarah (Brandon) Stock of Altamont, Christopher (fiancee Lindsey Young) Wendling of Farina, and Mallory Wendling of Altamont; four great-grandchildren, Andrew and Leah Tappendorf and Spencer and Silas Stock; and one brother, Lee (the late Roxanne) Schaefer of California.
Mr. Schaefer was retired from a 20-year career with the United States Navy. After his retirement, he was self-employed in heating and ventilation services. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Elks and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also an avid golfer.
