---- — Leo William Smith, 83, of Cowden, passed away at 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at St. Johns Hospital, Springfield.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Lockart-Green Funeral Home, Cowden, with the Rev. Lynette DeAtley officiating. Burial will be in Mound Cemetery, Cowden, with military rites by Shelby County Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday with Masonic rites at 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Kidney Foundation. Condolences may be left at www.lockartgreenfuneralhome.com.
He was born May 26, 1930, in Shelby County, the son of William Howard and Goldie May (Wall) Smith. He married Leona Jane Adams on June 14, 1953, in Riverton, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 18, 1985. He then married Carolyn Soulon on Nov. 26, 2004, in Shelbyville. He served in the U.S. Army, was a member of the Cowden Christian Church, Tower Hill American Legion and Carpenters Local 742 in Decatur.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn; sons, Leon Smith (Julie) of Cowden, Lyn Smith (Doris) of Tower Hill and Lee Smith (Beverly) of Effingham; daughter, Leah Sinks (Tony) of Washington; stepson, Dennis Irvin of Jack, Texas; stepdaughters, Sherry Harpford (Chris) of Plainville, Ohio, and Donna Oglesby (Ronald) of Centralia; sisters, Verla Voudrie of Pana and Ruby Scammhorn of Okeechobee, Fla.; seven grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Leona Jane; brother, George Smith; and sister, Joni Fernandez.
