---- — Merle E. Underwood, 86 of Cincinnati, formerly of St. James, passed away at 9:20 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2013 at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at C & A Pagel Funeral Home, St. Elmo. Burial with military rites by St. Elmo American Legion will be in Lovett Cemetery, rural St. Elmo. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are requested to the Underwood family.
Merle was born on Dec. 4, 1926, in Fayette County, the son of John and Margaret (Miller) Underwood. He married Mary L. Logue on July 24, 1957, at St. Elmo and she preceded him in death on Aug. 7, 1999. He was a retired from the former Fedders Corp., Effingham, and enjoyed genealogy, hunting and fishing. Merle was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his children, Marie (Gene) Dye of Altamont, Gene Underwood of Tyler, Texas, John Underwood of Springfield, Marilyn Underwood of Cincinnati, Carl “Taco” (Linda) Underwood of Beecher City, Gary (Sheila) Underwood of St. Elmo, and Mary (Greg) Devall of Effingham; eight grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded by his parents; three siblings, Dorwin John Underwood and Norma Jean Underwood, both in infancy, and Earl Wayne Underwood.
