Dorothy Lucille Katherine Chesnut was born on April 12, 1919, in Buckley, the daughter of John and Ethel (Daniel) Fallert. She was the only daughter of six children. Dorothy attended Newton Community High School where she was one of the last surviving members of the 1937 graduation class. Dorothy married Morton (Scotty) Chesnut on April 22, 1939, in Henderson, Ky., and he preceded her in death on Dec. 14, 1990.

Alongside Scotty, she was a cattle and grain farmer in Jasper County, her entire married life. She also worked at the Red & White Grocery Store, Ettlebrick Shoe Factory, and E.R. Moore Garment Factory. Dorothy enjoyed quilting, crocheting and many other handicrafts. Her beautiful hand work graces all of her children’s homes. Dorothy was a bible scholar who taught Sunday School and Bible Study classes for many years. She was a member of the Smallwood Home Extension Club and the First Baptist Church of Newton. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Imboden Creek Living Center. The nurses and CNA’s were so caring to Mother while living and during her departing.

Dorothy was a beautiful lady who loved her family. Left to cherish her memory are her four children, Constance (Martin) Gorrell of Decatur, Beverly (Larry “Red”) Matson of Newton, Dennis (Carolyn) Chesnut of Lone Jack, Mo., and Rebecca Fehrenbacher of Decatur; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband; parents; grandson, Tommy Gorrell; five brothers, Paul, Marion, Charles, Walter and Sherman Fallert; and her special friend, Merrill Brown.
