---- — Gary Reid Buchanan, 76, of Cowden, passed away at 4:47 p.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at St. John’s Hospital, Springfield.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church, Cowden. Masonic rites will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday with services immediately following. The Rev. Darrel Hinkle will officiate. Burial will be in Myers Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to Cowden First Responders/ Fire Department. Arrangements are by Lockart-Green Funeral Home, Cowden. Gary was born Feb. 5, 1938, in Shelbyville, the son of Wilmer Reid and Bonita (Cihak) Buchanan. He married Hilda Lee Neece April 7, 1968, in Pana. Gary served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1960, stationed in Hawaii and Guam. He was a member of the Cowden American Legion, Past Master and life member of the Joppa Lodge 706 in Cowden and now the Greenland Lodge 665 in Beecher City, 32nd Degree Mason, Scottish Rite of Danville, and served as assistant Fire Chief of Cowden for 20 years. He operated Buchanan Service Station in Cowden with his father and brother for over 50 years.

Gary held his pilots license and loved to fly. He was a member of the “feared” Taylor Bowling team and loved to hunt and eat mushrooms, playing horseshoes and cards and telling a good story. He was a pillar of the community, helping people and enjoying his time spent with family and friends.

Surviving are his wife, Hilda; children, Jean Ann McKavetz of Cowden, James L. Robinson (Bev) of Cowden, Liada Paradee (Scott) of Assumption, Trent R. Buchanan of Cowden and Tim Buchanan of Cowden; grandchildren, Dana Robison (Larry), Leann Mason (Kelly), Jared Day, Becky Higgins, Jill Higgins, Hillary Buchanan, Chance Buchanan, Blaine Buchanan, Jhett Buchanan and Chuck Bennett (Zel); 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Donna Banning of Effingham; and brother, W. Trent Buchanan (Shirley) of Cowden.

He was preceded in death by his parents and stepson, Ernie Bennett.
