Kayla D. Houston, 22, of Effingham, formerly of Vandalia, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at Effingham.
Celebration of life services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Fairlawn Cemetery, Vandalia, with the Rev. Louis Frick officiating. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, Vandalia. Memorials: Autism Speaks and/or Second Chance Animal Rescue. She was born Sept. 3, 1991, in Breese, the daughter of Bill F. and Amy B. (Helm) Houston. She was affiliated with the First United Methodist Church, Vandalia, and loved the outdoors, hunting and kayaking. She was a track and basketball standout at VCHS; two-time back-to-back state champion in the 1600 meter relay; and holds school records in 4x100, 400, 800 and 1600 relay teams.
She is survived by parents and brother, Cameron Houston, all of Vandalia; maternal grandparents, Barb Behrends and Jim of Brownstown, and Rick Helm and Saundra of Vandalia; paternal grandmother, Faye Moreland of Vandalia; and maternal great-grandfather, Russell Hewitt of Vandalia.
Preceded in death by paternal grandfather, Mick Moreland; maternal great-grandparents, Juanita Hewitt and Gerald and Helen Helm; paternal great-grandmother, Almedia Haney.
