Merle A. Elmore, 84, of Newton, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013 at his home surrounded by his family.
Funeral services celebrating Merle’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Newton Christian Church with Rev. Brad Harper officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Crain Funeral Home, Newton. Burial will be in the Trexler Cemetery, rural Newton, with full military rites by Jasper Post No. 20 of the American Legion.
Memorial gifts in memory of Merle may be made to the Newton Christian Church or to the Lincolnland Hospice.
Merle was born on Dec. 3, 1929 in South Muddy Township, Jasper County, the son of Homer and Mamie (Clagg) Elmore. He served his country in the United States Marine Corp. On Feb. 24, 1953, Merle married Rosemary Childers in California. After returning to Jasper County, Merle was a grain farmer until his retirement.
Merle was a member of the Newton Christian Church, Jasper Post No. 20 of the American Legion. He served on the Bishop Mutual Board and the North Muddy Township Board. From 1972-1982, he served on the Jasper County Board where he was chairman for the last two years of service.
Merle will be loved and remembered by his wife of sixty years, Rosemary Elmore of Newton; daughter, Marilyn Miller, husband Fred of Newton; granddaughters, Rebecca Kennedy, husband Kevin of Newton and Emily Shull, husband Caleb of Pinckneyville; great-grandchildren, Michael and Amelia Kennedy and Brooklyn Shull; brothers, Marvin Elmore, wife Dorothy of Wheeler, Vonley Elmore of Wheeler, Sheldon Elmore, wife Betty of Mason, Loren Elmore, wife Norma Jean of Johnsonville, Roscoe Elmore, wife Edith of Wheeler; sisters, Ilene Corso of Newton and Beverly Flinn, husband Paul Dean of Milton, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
His parents, brothers Alvin and Dean Elmore, and infant sister Katherine preceded him in death.
