Clarence Edwin Carl Ewald was born May 18, 1921, one mile south of Moccasin, in Moccasin Township, Effingham County. He was one of four siblings born into the Christian family of William and Carrie Mell-Ewald. Clarence grew up with brother, Rudy and sisters, Luella and Viola. He lived in the same home he was born in until June 2013.

Clarence was baptized and confirmed his faith at the St. Paul “Blue Point” Lutheran Church where he was a life-long member. Clarence received his education from the Moccasin Grade School, the “Blue Point” Lutheran School and the Altamont Community High School. He was the Effingham County Grade School Spelling Champion in 1936 and a member of “Who’s Who in Illinois High Schools” in 1940. Mr. Ewald was a former church treasurer, a former township trustee, and a former township ASC Committee member. He was a member of the Effingham County Farm Bureau, and a retired farmer.

Clarence was a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan, although he did watch the St. Louis Cardinals games when the Cubs were not playing. He also enjoyed watching the Illini basketball games, and was an avid listener of the early morning show on the local radio station, as well as listening to the local area schools’ basketball games that were broadcast on that station.
