Karen Sue Fuqua, 69, of Mattoon, passed away at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, at her residence.
Mass of Christian burial celebrating her life will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Mattoon, with the Rev. John Titus officiating. Burial will at Roselawn Cemetery, Charleston. Visitation for family and friends will be from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Monday at Schilling Funeral Home, 1301 Charleston Ave., Mattoon. Memorial donations in her honor may be given to Lake Land College Nursing Scholarship at St. Anthony School in Effingham.
Karen was born on October 1, 1944, in Mattoon the daughter of Robert Leonard and Mildred (Harlan) Fuqua. Karen was a graduate of the University of Illinois. She received her law degree from Northern Illinois University Law School. Karen practiced law in Central Illinois for 32 years. She was on the Lake Land College Board of Trustees for eight years. Karen was very active in the community and served on numerous boards. She was also a member of the Immaculate Conception Church.
Survivors include her sister, Marilyn Fuqua Thompson of Mattoon; brother, Dr. Gordon (Dr. Paula Bills) Fuqua of Cranston, R.I.; friend, Tom Anderson Cross of Charleston; nieces, Nicole (Eric) Zeller of Effingham, Erica (Jeff) Sidenstricker of Meridian, Miss., Claire (Tom) Robinson of Cranston, R.I., Amanda (Dan) Eckels of San Francisco, Calif.; great nieces and nephew, Grace Elizabeth Zeller and Kaitlyn Anne Zeller, both of Effingham, Hazel Robinson of Cranston, R.I., Betty Eckels and James Eckels of San Francisco, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Robert Harlan Fuqua.
