---- — Joel Leon Winn, age 82 of Newton, IL passed away at 5 p.m. Saturday, December 21, 2013 at his home.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today, Dec. 23, at lake-Buchanan Funeral Home in Newton, IL with Jim Suits officiating. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton, IL with full military rites by the Jasper Post 20 American Legion. Visitation will be held 1 hour before the service. Joel Leon was born on September 14, 1931 in Union County, Illinois the son of Charles Robert and Rosie (Volner) Winn. He married Bettie Robertson on June 29, 1958 and she survives. Joel served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1952 to 1953.
He was a graduate of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.
Joel retired from the Illinois Department of Human Services having worked as a Superintendent for many years. He enjoyed working crossword puzzles, reading the newspapers and collected furniture, pottery and antiques.
Joel is survived by wife of 55 years, Bettie Winn of Newton, IL; two children, Joey (Karen) Winn of Newton, IL; Michelle (Rick) Wolfe of Casey, IL; six grandchildren, Justin Winn, Jason (Jaime) Winn, Jared Winn, Creighton Wolfe, Brogan (Kelsey) Wolfe and Ashtyn Wolfe; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Don Winn of Florissant, MO; three sisters, Lucille Lambert of St. Louis, MO; Esta Rogers of Florissant, MO and Roberta (Jim) Suits of Hopkinsville, KY.
Joel was preceded in death by his parents.
