---- — George J. Swingler, 77, of rural Sigel, passed away at 5:31 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013, at the St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, Effingham.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Sigel, with the Rev. Sunder Ery officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Dec. 20, at the church, with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service with a K of C rosary immediately following. Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery, Sigel. Swengel-O’Dell Funeral Home, Neoga, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice. Online condolences may be expressed at swengel-odell.com.
He was born Jan. 8, 1936, in Sigel, the son of Otto and Lena (Koelsch) Swingler. George married Mary Ann Willenborg, April 25, 1964, in Effingham. He was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Church, Sigel, served in the U.S. Army, a retired dairy and grain farmer, a member of the Sigel American Legion Post 1134 and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 665 of Effingham.
Mr. Swingler leaves wife, Mary Ann Swingler of rural Sigel; four children, Cindy Stephens and husband Monty of Sigel, Jeff Swingler and wife Kelly of Sigel, Angie Althoff and husband Paul of Effingham, and Kay Mette and husband Rich of Sigel; one sister, Mary Ann Swingler of Effingham; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one stepgrandson; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Mr. Swingler was preceded in death by his parents.
