Helen A. Beckert, 85, of Effingham, passed away at 12:05 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, at her home.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Effingham, with burial in St. Anthony Cemetery, Effingham. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Johnson Funeral Home, Effingham. Memorials may be made to St. Anthony Grade School, Effingham, American Heart Association or donor’s choice. Helen was born April 18, 1927, in Greenville, the daughter of Harry J. and Dorothy (Wise) Hammer. She married Byrl Beckert June 30, 1951, in Greenville, and he survives. Helen was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Sigma Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and Ann Crooker St. Clair Chapter Daughters of American Revolution. Helen was an elementary school teacher at St. Anthony Grade School for 17 years. She graduated in the Class of 1945 from Greenville High School and earned a bachelor of science degree in Home Economics from the University of Illinois in Champaign.
Helen is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Byrl Beckert of Effingham; children, Steven (Kris) Beckert of Olney, Christine (Brad) Boldt of Kernersville, N.C., Katherine (Randy) Klitzing of Altamont, Mark Beckert of Effingham, Patricia Camp of Walkersville, Md., and John Beckert of Effingham; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Mary Louise Helgeson.
