---- — Ellen Rose Dewhirst, 86, of Newton, passed away at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, at her home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Newton, with the Rev. Al Kemme celebrating Mass. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Newton. Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday at the church. In loving memory of Rose, memorials may be made to the St. Thomas Catholic School. Ellen Rose was born on Aug. 23, 1927, in Malta, the daughter of Leo and Cecilia (Barr) Henry.

She was raised in Dekalb County, one of eight children. After becoming a registered nurse, Rose met Clifford B. Dewhirst. They married on Feb. 2, 1952, in Elgin, and he preceded her in death on April 21, 2007. Rose worked until retirement in nursing, working at Richland Memorial Hospital and Newton Central Grade School. In retirement she and Clifford purchased a NAPA store in Kirkland. Rose enjoyed crafts such as painting and quilting. She also frequently wrote poetry for family and friends.

She enjoyed people and hosting gatherings for family and friends. Rose enjoyed documenting family gatherings with photographs. Rose was a member of the St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.

Those surviving to mourn her loss are daughter, Carole Roberts of McLeansboro; granddaughter, Stephanie (Bill) Gray of Evansville, Ind.; three great-granddaughters, Kelcy, Hunter and Reagan; sisters, Vera Anderson of Sycamore, and Suzanne Henry of Denver.

Rose was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sons, Vincent Dewhirst and Curt Dewhirst; son-in-law, Wayne Roberts; grandson, Matthew Roberts; and siblings, Donald Henry, Eugene “Mike” Henry, Dale Henry, Raymond Henry and Rita Covert.
